Europe in 1914
"How many will return and march in the victory parade?"
At half past two in the night of 3 August, 1914 , a crowded train station stood waiting to leave Paris, France. Every carriage was packed with fully equipped soldiers waiting to go to war. As they waited for the train to move off, one of them wrote in his diary:
"2:30am. Where shall we be tomorrow? How many of us will be alive a month from now? And how many will return and march in the victory parade admits the applause of the crowd?"
The answers to his questions were more terrible than he could imagine. A month later, most of those men on the train would already be dead. The survivors did not return for four years, and very few were physically cable to march in any victory parade. For during those four years, over six million were wounded and another six million went missing, never to be seen again.
The solider was writing in his diary on his way to the biggest conflict the world had ever seen. The Great War of 1914 - 1918. This site tells the story of how it began, the pain endured by millions and its unexpected finale. We begin with the stories of five great Empires: Britain, Russia, France, Germany and Austria-Hungary and how each one contributed to "The war to end all wars".
QUESTIONS:
1. The soldier did not know what to expect from the war. Why do you think this could have been the case?
2. Look carefully at the map of Europe. Could you make a prediction on who would fight who in this conflict?
