LIFE IN THE TRENCHES
Once the First World War begun, the German army rushed through Belgium towards France, where they were stopped by French and English armies. Very soon, each side was facing off in a stalemate. Neither side would give up ground. So they dug trenches in the ground and prepared for a long war.

going 'over the top'
When soldiers were asked to go into battle, it often led to slaughter. The men were asked to climb out of the trench and go 'over the top' of the defences and charge at the enemy. In one battle at the Somme, 22,000 British soldiers were killed in one afternoon. Watch this clip closely. It comes from the film 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. It begins with a group of German soldiers preparing to go into battle against the French. Study it closely and complete the following task:
