POSTCARDS FROM THE FRONT
“Postcards from the Western Front”
Minor Project
You are required to take on the role of a soldier on the Front Line in Western Europe in World War One, writing a letter home to family or friends (300 words).
1. You will demonstrate your knowledge of the conditions that soldiers lived in and battles that were fought in this area of the conflict. Your letter must contain 4 specific facts from the battle you researched - for example:
a) You could mention the time of year and weather, rain snow or mud? Heat and flies?
b) The kind of weapons used, Gas? Tanks? Machine guns?
c) The people who fought, German? French? Australian? English? Italian?
Battles to research are:
a) Verdun - a battle with tanks
b) Pachendale - a battle fought in mud and snow
c) Flanders - where the red poppies grew after the battle
d) Fromelles - A site of huge Australian casualties
e) Ypres - or 'wipers' - a cold and deadly battle
2. As this is a creative writing task, your letter will be written in a similar style to the language used at the time, which will help demonstrate your accurate knowledge and research of individual experiences on the Western Front.
3. Battles to research may be any fought on the Western Front in World War One. You may be a soldier of any nationality, you can’t die during your letter!!!!!!
4. Make sure you include information about what it was like in the trenches, the impact of rats, injuries and conditions. You could also include your thoughts on what the war was like, compared to the propaganda you would have seen.
5. The letter must be typed and submitted below:
